Group Of Apple Engineers Working On Wearable iPod

Posted on 02-21-2012

A small group of Apple engineers are working on wearable devices. The one that is coming to light right now is a stylish curved glass iPod that is to be worn around the wrist and controlled using Siri. The NYTimes reports wearable tech is on the minds of the Apple team, but how much do we really know considering Apple's track record of keeping things quiet.

Based off a Design from Gopinath Prasana, it is a mockup of the real thing. Prasana has dubbed it the future, and called it the iBangle.

It’s not clear what wireless technology Apple might use, though the company did add Bluetooth 4.0 support in its recent iPhone 4S.

The iPod nano and shuffle have been moving in the direction of becoming more wearable in the last few years. The rumored iBangle would be a further step in that direction.

Apple has also released wearable systems like ANT+ and Nike+ which use low-power wireless connections to join sensors such as pedometers to smartphones and PMPs. Garmin released an ANT+ compatible watch earlier this year.

Everything with Apple's future products is a guessing game though. Only people deep inside the company know the full scope of future product plans. It's fun to think about the possibliities though.

The Ugliest, Most Powerful iPhone Case

Posted on 02-16-2012

AQUA TEK S for iPhone 4 & 4S might just be the most rugged iPhone case on the market. And technically, it's not even on the market.

The AQUA TEK S was developed by SnowLizard Products and is currently raising funding on Kickstarter.com. You are able to get your hands on one early if you pledge $100 to the project. Which is a deal, they say they're going to sell them for $129.99 when they hit the market.

The AQUA TEK S makes the Otterbox case look like delicate piece of china.

The Features

If you're into the outdoors the AQUA TEK S might be the answer you're looking for. It is the first ever battery powered, solar charged, waterproof iPhone 4/4S case. Made for technology enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies in mind, I see this case being a great buy for a lot of people. Camping, climbing, skiing, fishing or snorkeling, the AQUA TEK S will be right there with you, keeping you're iPhone safe and usable at the same time.

  • Solar Charged
  • Waterproof
  • Battery Powered
  • Tough As Nails

Personally I love it. I do a lot of kayaking in the back bays of Southwest Florida and have been looking for something like this for a while. Currently I have to keep my iPhone in a dry bag, but doing so I miss out on a lot of manatee and dolphin photos because it takes so long to get the iPhone out of the bag. With the AQUA TEK S, I will be able to connect it to a lanyard around my neck and be ready to go. No more worries about water damage and I'll be able to charge at the same time.

For more information and photos go to the AQUA TEK S Kickstarter page. Let us know what you think, would you be interested in an iPhone case like this?

Cheers, Ryan - MilliTalk

Seeing Red? Making That Valentine's Day Phone Call

Posted on 02-14-2012

Gentlemen, I hope you have flowers bought for the woman in your life by now. You’ll be hearing about it if you haven’t. Valentine’s Day is a day dedicated to showing our love for that special someone. It may be a large commercial holiday, but it still feels good to make that person feel special.

Many people can’t be with their loved one on Valentine’s Day. They could be away for work, separated by oceans because of military service or a handful of other reasons. If you can’t be with your loved one, the next best thing is to hear that person’s voice.

MilliTalk makes it easier for people to talk longer and talk for less. With some of the lowest international rates in the phone service industry, MilliTalk lets lovebirds located in other countries talk for much less. Then if you really want to take advantage of MilliTalk’s services, all MilliTalk to MilliTalk calls are absolutely free, no matter where in the world you and your loved one are. As long as both people have MilliTalk on their iOS device, you’ll be able to talk for as long as your heart desires. And something tells me that’s going to be a long time on this particular day.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the MilliTalk team!

Emails Hits From Apple Founder

Posted on 02-09-2012

Letters to Steve

It seems that Apple’s creator, Steve Jobs, is becoming more of an icon after death than he was while living. Isn’t that they way of most captivating figures in history?

A new ebook from CNN technology writer Mark Millian, explores how Jobs fielded emails from fans and even customers. The ebook is called “Letters to Steve: Inside the E-mail Inbox of Apple’s Steve Jobs.

Description From Amazon

Through his incredible foresight and technological mastery, Steve Jobs touched billions of people's lives around the world over several decades. He attracted a cult-like following that lined up to buy the computers and gadgets produced by Apple Inc. Over the years, people discovered the e-mail address of Jobs and took to regularly sending him messages. That he often responded was as unusual as his leadership style and his processes for crafting hit products.

Mark Milian, a technology writer for CNN, has reviewed more than a hundred of these e-mails, compiled from those posted by fans to blogs and online message boards. Some never-before-published e-mails from Jobs were shared exclusively for this book. As a whole, these correspondences provide a behind-the-scenes and inside-the-mind account of Jobs' final and most triumphant years. During this time, he returned to Apple and led the beleaguered computer maker from the brink of bankruptcy to becoming the most valuable technology company in the world, while also managing Pixar Animation Studios, an innovative production company that rocketed the Walt Disney Company into a new era of family films.

This book is based on interviews with many of the customers and fans Jobs communicated with. These tales reveal the intricacies of how Jobs portrayed himself as likable and accessible through direct interaction with fans. He handled customer-service inquiries himself and carefully revealed hints about upcoming Apple products, guaranteeing headlines on blogs. However, some of these letters, when analyzed, provide a glimpse into his "reality distortion field," in which he lobs insults, bends the truth and uses misdirection in order to manipulate anyone on the receiving end. This book has been self-published in digital form, and is not associated with or endorsed by CNN.

Mixed Reviews

I was about ready to purchase this ebook (on my iPad, thank you Steve) but thought I’d read through the reviews first. At the time of this writing there are 6 reviews, 3 negative and 3 positive.

The negative reviews go on about how the author wasn’t up to the task of writing this book and that it was poorly written. Also that he referred to Apple fans as sheep. I consider myself an Apple guy because of their superior products, not because I was seduced by creative marketing. I don’t see the need to be negative towards a group of consumers. I’m not really sure what the author is trying to do. Also, is the author just trying to make a buck off the passing of Steve Jobs? Leaves a bad taste in your mouth if you know what I mean.

On the positive side I do think the emails of Steve Jobs would be an interesting look into the mind and personality of the Apple creator.

If you’ve read this ebook I would love to know what you thought.

Cheers,

Ryan – Millicorp

Kids and Calling, Do The Two Mix

Posted on 02-07-2012

We all want our kids to be safe and that means keeping tabs on where they are. The best way to do that is with a phone, but the thought of a tween or younger handling a delicate cell phone and talking for hours and hours on expensive cellular minutes is frightening to say the least.

I’m not sure we can completely take all the worry away, but we think MilliTalk is a great solution for kids and calling.

Kids, Calling & Phones

Hand Me Down Phones Let’s face it, cell phones can be expensive, especially if we’re talking about fancy new smartphones. Giving a new iPhone to a 9 year old might be the same as pulling out a couple hundred dollars bills and setting them on fire. Giving them your old iPhone is a smart move and lowers the impact of loss or destruction.

No Cellular Service

Now that your child is beaming with excitement because they are the happy new owner of your old iPhone, it’s time to show them how to use it. Because the phone has been sitting unused it likely has no cellular service or contract. This is a good thing, you don’t want your youngster sending 1000’s of texts and talking to their friends for hours on end with cellular service. Those overage fees could send you to an early grave!

The smart way to stay connected to your child without giving them phone service is to using a calling app like MilliTalk. Simply download the app on the old iPhone and set them up with their very own phone number. A huge feature is the free MilliTalk to MilliTalk calling. Make sure all family members have MilliTalk and you’ll all be able to stay connected for free and talk for as long as you want.

Real Life Example

Millicorp’s lead developer, Joe, has 3 great kids. He has given one of them his old iPhone 3G and the other two children have iPod Touches. All 3 children have downloaded MilliTalk and can now call friends and family whenever they want. The ability to use these devices as phones gives the kids a huge sense of pride and makes them feel all grown up. They use the telephone app to check-in with Joe and his wife, call grandparents and of course chat with friends.

“Giving them my old iPhone and iPod Touch gave them such a huge sense of pride, every child wants to feel grown up. Plus giving them the ability to call us without having cellular service is a huge plus.”

While the thought of your young children having an iPhone might sound like pure craziness, think about the benefits of a telephone app. Free calling to other MilliTalkers and no expensive cellular overage fees. It will be a huge benefit to you and your family.

How MilliTalk Works

Posted on 02-02-2012

Plain and simple, we connect people through digital voice. Instead of using expensive telephone lines and cell phone carriers we use data. It’s inexpensive, fast, reliable and the way of the future.

The technology is called Voice Over Internet Protocal (VoIP), but we prefer to say digital calling or internet phone service. It’s a lot easier to say!

Get ready to change the way you think about long-distance phone calls because this is the way telephone service is heading. Most of the time when you’re using your cell phone this is how you are talking to others. Your signal hits the cell tower and transferred over the internet. VoIP or data calling is the method of taking analog audio signals, the kind you hear when you talk on the phone, and turning them into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet.

How is this useful?

Digital calling can turn a standard Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls. The practical upside of this is that by using a service like MilliTalk to make phone calls, you're bypassing the phone company (and its charges) entirely. It’s a great way to make calls when you’re not in cell phone range or in a building that’s a black-hole for coverage.

Above all else, digital calling is basically a clever "reinvention of the wheel." Its applications and the potential of this emerging technology, which will more than likely one day replace the traditional phone system entirely, is changing the way people connect.

If you're interested in trying digital calling, then take a look at MilliTalk. You can download it for free in the Apple iTunes App store, setup takes about three minutes and you’ll be talking with friends and family totally free with MilliTalk Preview. Invite friends and family to download MilliTalk and you’ll be talking for free for as long as you like! Like I said, we connect people, plain and simple.

Cheers,

Is Free Calling A Myth?

Posted on 01-31-2012

Free calling might be a concept as foreign as living in outer space, but if you look in the right places this magical world is completely real.

I don’t know about you but looking at my cell phone usage every week to make sure I’m not going to go over my minutes is a pain. Why can’t things just be simple?

Free calling might be a concept as foreign as living in outer space, but if you look in the right places this magical world is completely real. People all over the world calling and talking for free with no minute restrictions, yes it’s a wonderful thing. You don’t even have to be in the same country, free calling can happen across town or across the globe. I’ll tell you how.

Cellular carriers like AT&T, Verizon and T-Moblile all charge for monthly talk time. You sign a contract for X amount of minutes a month, these contracts charge you anywhere from $20 to $90 a month to talk on your cell phone. Then if you go over your contracted minutes, forget about it. They’re going to charge a premium price to punish you.

The direction voice communication is heading is digitally over the internet. What, my voice isn’t traveling over telephone lines? No, all communication, including voice is moving to the internet. This change over is going to increase call clarity and give you a host of other features like SMS, video and data sharing. When information is transmitted through the internet the price drops dramatically. New companies like MilliTalk have figured out how to pass along the price savings to customers and have begun to promote their digital voice phone services.

Sounds good but saving money isn’t the same as free.

To talk for free you’ll need app like ours for your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. MilliTalk phone service, a free download in the app store, allows people to talk for free to anyone else with the same app. Across town or across the globe, you’ll be able to talk to friends and family for as long as you like. That is free calling at its finest.

Cheers,

Ryan

We know that typing in your information over and over gets extremely tiresome and annoying. The MilliTalk team has worked hard to make the purchasing process as easy and seamless as possible. Other internet phone providers require you to type out your name, address, contact information, shoe size and more. Some even force you to leave your mobile device and input your information on a computer. No more! MilliTalk makes it easy. With MilliTalk all you have to do is be logged into your Apple account, from there you can sign up or upgrade your plan and you'll be talking via the MilliTalk app in seconds. You're billed automatically through your iTunes account, just like downloading a new song. Simple and easy.

New MilliTalk Plans and Lower Pricing

You spoke and we listened. We know people have different calling needs, so we've created a calling plan that is both flixible and affordable. This new plan is only $39.99 for the entire year. Try and find a cell phone carrier that offers a price like that, you won't find one. If you choose not to purchase our calling plan you can still take advantage of quality calling features with MilliTalk Free.

Stability & Quality

We are constantly improving call quality and stability. MilliTalk is so good it's as if the person you're calling is in the next room. Making a phone call using our app is no different than making a call with your regular cell phone, only we don't charge those high per minute prices.
